Live whale shark found stranded in PNOC pier GMA News Online 7 Aug 2013 A live butanding (whale shark, Rhincodon typus) was spotted stuck in the Batangas dock of the Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC) this afternoon, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources director Asis Perez. "Confirmed na may butanding na nakapasok sa PNOC pier, sa Mabini, Batangas. Buhay pa naman po," Perez told GMA News Online in a phone interview. He added that they have sent Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) staff to Batangas to study ways to free the butanding. Whale shark experts from Donsol, Sorsogon, are also on their way to the site, Perez said. In February 2010, a whale shark was found with its fins sliced off the shores of Tingloy Island in Batangas province. In the Philippines, whale sharks have been hunted in the waters off Bohol, Misamis Oriental and Sorsogon, usually for its fins and meat, which are exported to China, Hongkong and Taiwan, according to the World Wildlife Fund. — TJD, GMA News.
