Cat-sized tarsier found in Southern Leyte
November 19, 2014
Tacloban City – A cat-sized tarsier has been found in Southern Leyte, a report from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources office in Region 8 (DENR-8) based here said.
DENR-8 Regional Director Leonardo Sibbaluca told reporters Tuesday that an unusually big tarsier has been found in Barangay Catmon, Silago, in the forest portion of Mount Nacolod bordering several towns in the province.
Normally, a tarsier is the size more or less of the human fist, but this newly found tarsier, according to Sibbaluca, is more or less the size of the cat.
Sibbaluca informed reporters that the big tarsier was found by the team conducting the validation and assessment of Mount Nacolod’s natural resources and biodiversity. The team was composed of representatives from DENR-8, the National Museum, local government units and members of peoples’ organization, he added.
The team is under the auspices of the New Conservation Areas in the Philippines Project (NewCAPP), a five-year project of the Philippine government with financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the United Nations Development Programme. It is being implemented by the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau of the DENR, Sibbaluca added.
DENR-8 Protected Area Wildlife Division officer-in-charge and NewCAPP Mt. Nacolod Project Management Officer Crisostomo Badeo Jr., who is also a forester said that at present, studies are being conducted on the factors why the tarsier found in the area is unusually big compared with the usual tarsier.
