Kabayan, Benguet – Some 700 pine tree seedlings were planted in the Mt. Pulag reservation to replace those cut down to convert part of the forest into vegetable gardens.
The activity, led by Bokod and Kabayan government officials at the foot of Mt. Pulag in Sitio Naubanan, Ekip, Bokod, involved the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) and the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO).
PENRO Chief Octavio Cuanso said that they filed a case against three persons last July 7 for violation of the forestry code — illegal tree cutting and forest conversion of a large area of Naubanan watershed.
Arthur Tampoc, Abelo Miwan, and Mila Madino were charged based on the report submitted by Mt. Pulag National Park Protected Area Superintendent Emerita Albas, Forester Paul Apilis, Engr. Edgardo Garcia with Forest Rangers Mark Chaloping and Jimsy Batan.
The filing of the case came after Anti-Illegal Logging Task Force personnel, led by Bokod Mayor Macario Macay, discovered last May 22 cut trees and farm development in an area where the three had also built a house near the farm.
Officials estimate about 10 hectares of forest area destroyed and converted into vegetable gardens, fearing further and complete destruction of the Naubanan watershed.
CENRO-Baguio Officer Ed Flor said the conversion of the forest to vegetable garden is like a blink of an eye that happens so fast; this, despite the prohibition in and the guarding of the area.
“We are completing the documents and we will be filing five more cases,” Flor said.
The two lauded the provincial government of Benguet for building a Community Police Assistance Center (COMPAC) police station in the area, where police and the Anti-Illegal Logging Task Force can stay to continuously protect the area from illegal loggers and those intending to take the remaining forest for their garden.
