Racing against time to save Panay biodiversity Tara Yap September 10, 2014 Iloilo City, Iloilo – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Western Visayas (DENR-6) is racing against time to save animal and plant life in the mountains of Central Panay. DENR-6 Regional Director Jim Sampulna said the agency’s Biodiversity Partnership Project aims to conserve what remains of animal, flora and fauna specie here. The mountains of Central Panay are home to such endemic species as the bushy-tailed cloud rat, Hornbill bird, Negros-bleeding heart pigeon, Panay cloud runner rat, and the Visayan spotted deer. “Many of the species in Central Panay are not found elsewhere,” Sampulna noted. The creation of a Local Project Site Committee will oversee conservation efforts for a period of six years on 120,770.60 hectares of forestland in four provinces on Panay Islands, that is, Aklan, Antique, Capiz, and Iloilo. The committee will have participation from local government officials led by Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Sr., four indigenous people’s organizations, seven national government agencies, the academe, and a private organization. Conrado Marquez, DENR-6 Technical Director for Protected Areas, Wildlife and Coastal Zones Management Service, said the Biodiversity Partnership Project will cover 16 towns in the four provinces. Ongoing biological assessments led by senior biologist Blas Tabranza Jr. will be used as basis for the declaration of remaining biodiversity and critical habitats in the Central Panay Mountains Range.
