MANILA, Philippines - Who's the heartless person who shot dead a Philippine eagle, leaving orphan a seven-month-old eaglet now struggling to survive in a government protected area in Davao?
An angry Secretary Ramon Paje directed regional officials of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to quickly find the perpetrator of the shooting, while committing funding assistance to ensure the survival of the eaglet, which is being fed only by its father.
The decomposing body of the mother Philippine eagle was found August 14, some 10 kms away from its nesting site in in Sitio Mitondo, Sibulan, Davao City, according to a report by the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF), which has helped DENR monitor the eagle for years.
Those who recovered the dead eagle saw a crack at its keel bone, giving rise to the theory that the bird was shot.
Paje said Sunday he was “appalled by this awful news. It is sad to think that while we are trying to save the endangered Philippine eagle from extinction, there are those who are undermining our conservation efforts."
Paje told local DENR officials to seek the help of the police and the local government in tracking down the perpetrator and cause the filing of criminal charges.
Republic Act 6147, or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act, punishes with 12 years in jail and heavy fines those found guilty of hunting and killing the Philippine eagle.
At the same time, Paje told the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) of Mt. Apo to institute stricter measures to prevent similar incidents.
The DENR regional office was told to conduct a massive information campaign in the area.
The Philippine eagle, *( Pithecophaga jefferyi*) also known as the monkey-eating eagle, is considered one of the biggest, rarest and most powerful birds in the world. The
country’s national bird is critically endangered, however, thanks to the massive loss of habitat caused
by deforestation in the Mt. Apo area.
