Kapangan, Benguet – The fight to protect the environment will no longer end with merely apprehending those who illegally transport logs — the goal now is to stop the cutting of trees by placing the policemen closer to the forest.
The provincial government of Benguet recently turned over the first of the four government-funded Community Police Assistance Centers (COMPAC), which aim to cast a vigilant eye on local environment violators.
Benguet Governor Nestor Fongwan turned over the COMPAC which the province constructed in Barangay Balakbak, this town, to Provincial Police Officer (PPO) Senior Superintendent Rodolfo Azurin Jr. Police Regional Office-Cordillera (PROCOR) regional director Chief Superintendent Isagani Nerez and Kapangan Mayor Roberto Canuto witnessed the turnover.
Fongwan said that the station was set up in the barangay near the boundary of Kibungan town, which is also known for being the source of high-grade marijuana.
The facility will not only focus its attention on the usual programs of maintaining peace and order, including anti-illegal drug alert, but will also guard the forest from illegal loggers.
Three other COMPACs, which were all funded by the province and situated in strategic areas, are set to be inaugurated before the year ends.
Two will be erected in Mount Pulag in Kabayan and Mount Santo Tomas in Tuba, reported to be fast deteriorating due to the illegal cutting of trees. The fourth station will be situated at the boundary of Mankayan, Benguet and Cervantes, Ilocos Sur.
