Army turns over rare Philippine eagle Elena L. Aben April 19, 2014 The Philippine Army has turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) a rare Philippine hawk eagle rescued by soldiers in Samar. Capt. Amado Gutierrez, the 8th Infantry Division (8ID) spokesman, said the eagle was estimated to be five months old when found by the troops of the 87th Infantry Battalion (87IB) while conducting an assessment at the hinterlands of Pinabacdao-Sta Rita in Samar in the aftermath of super typhoon Yolanda November last year, The soldiers named the bird “Murayaw”, a Waray word that means “PEACE”. They took care of the eagle for four months and when the bird has regained its strength, was handed over to the DENR last April 15. A turn over ceremony led by Maj. Gen. Jet B. Velarmino, 8ID commander; and Lt . Col. Antonio B. Dulnuan, 87IB commander was held at 87IB headquarters, Barangay Polangi, Calbiga, Samar. “While our primary mandate is to protect the people from threat groups, we are fully aware of the national government’s environmental conservation programs and as such, we always provide necessary assistance to DENR,” said Velarmino. “The handing over of the Philippine hawk eagle that was nursed by the 87IB for four months to the DENR is a manifestation of our support to the environment conservation program of the government,” he added. Dulnuan said “Murayaw” will eventually be released in the wild where it belongs. Source: www.mb.com.ph/army-turns-over-rare-philippine-eagle/
