3 green sea turtles released back to sea March 24, 2014 Tacloban City – Three green sea turtles have been released back to the sea, a report from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources regional office 8 (DENR-8) said. DENR-8 Regional Executive Director Leonardo R. Sibbaluca told reporters that three green sea turtles (Chelonia Mydas) released back to sea at the shore area of Barangay Lalawigan, Borongan City, Eastern Samar. Sibbaluca said that the turtles were trapped in a fish coral (bono-an) in Lalawigan bay. The biggest of the three turtles measures more than half meter carapace. Sibbaluca also said the DENR placed metal tags on the right side flippers of the turtles before they released them back to sea. The tags had serial numbers PH02791, PH02801, and PH02821. Sibbaluca said marine turtles are among the world’s most endangered species so he encouraged the public to inform the DENR whenever they see a pawikan trapped in fish cages.
