SURIGAO CITY – The city and provincial governments of Surigao City and Surigao del Norte, along with the 1301st PNP Maritime are joining hands to protect the fish sanctuary of Pacific Ocean facing Surigao.
The groups made their strong move following the alleged continuous used of illegal fishermen of noxious substances and tiny nets to catch fish in the sanctuary.
Surigao City Mayor Ernesto T. Matugas and Surigao del Norte Gov. Sol F. Matugas, along with Surigao del Norte solons Rep. Francisco T. Matugas (1st District) and Rep. Guillermo A. Romarate, Jr. (2nd District) are pooling their respective resources to stop the illegal fishing activities within the Surigao seas. The LGU’s will utilize all barangay officials and concerned line agencies of the government to stop the illegal fishing activities.
“We are very much serious to put an end to these illegal fishing activities,” stressed Rep. Matugas, in an exclusive interview with Manila Bulletin.
Meanwhile, the local Philippine National Police (PNP) Maritime station here also made a commitment to provide a round-the-clock police protection and sea patrol to Buenavista Fish Sanctuary here.
Police Inspector Andres Banquel, Jr., commander of PNP Maritime 1301st station, said he was saddened to know that the fish sanctuary has been constantly raided by illegal fishermen who used illegal fishing paraphernalia.
Various reports reaching the PNP Maritime headquarters here also stated that illegal fishing goes unabated and rampant in Buenavista Fish Sanctuary.
In their first move to combat illegal fishing activities, barangay officials and PNP Maritime 1301st station will be organizing next week, a group of volunteers to be called as Buenavista Fish Sanctuary Brigade which will serve as support group of the maritime police in protecting marine habitat.
