BACOLOD CITY, Philippines -- Aviation security and environment officials seized on Wednesday spiders, beetles and centipedes that two persons were allegedly trying to smuggle through the New Bacolod-Silay Airport in Silay City.
The attempt to bring them out of the province was in violation of Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act, said Joan Gerangaya of Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro).
Gerangaya said that aviation security personnel detected the presence of the bugs when the box containing these passed through an X-ray machine. They then informed the environment office.
Cenro-Bacolod seized 32 beetles locally known as bagangan, three tarantula spiders and two six-inch centipedes.
They were packed in bottles with holes to allow them to breath and placed among mineral water bottles containing ice, Gerangaya said.
Apparently the ice was to provide a cool temperature inside the box, he said.
Gerangaya said the box, allegedly owned by one Gilbert Chingcuangco and a Japanese, Hisashi Ochisi, was abandoned after the items were detected. The two boarded their plane, which left for Manila, he added.
Gerangaya warned that the transport of animals, birds and insects taken from the wild violates the Wildlife Act unless they have special permits issued by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
The beetles, about three to four inches long, may have been intended either for beetle fights or as aphrodisiacs, Gerangaya said.
He said the bugs in each bottle were labeled according to gender.
