Two persons arrested for selling piranha Jenny F. Manongdo January 10, 2015 Two persons were arrested by authorities in Sta. Cruz, Manila last week for peddling live piranhas, a breed of exotic fish that could multiply rapidly and harm the natural waterways. The District Special Operations Unit (DSOU) of the Manila Police District apprehended Jordan Carlos, 25, a resident of Tondo, and a 17-year old minor, also from Tondo, after they were caught selling piranhas along the sidewalk of Tayuman street near corner Rizal Avenue at about 7:45 p.m. on January 8. According to the DSOU police report, the suspects were selling 100 pieces of the exotic fish placed inside clear plastic bags. A bag contained 25 pieces of the banned exotic fish being sold for P130 each. The suspects told arresting officers that they were supposed to deliver the piranhas to a customer. The suspects were charged for violating Republic Act (RA) 8550, or the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998, that prohibits the sale of piranhas and RA 9147 or the Act Providing for the Conservation and Protection of Wildlife Resources and their Habits.
