Ex-Silliman President named national scientist

Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental — The National Academy of Science and Technology has conferred upon Professor Emeritus Dr. Angel C. Alcala the title National Scientist, the highest award to be conferred by the Philippine government on a Filipino scientist.
Dr. Alcala, a former president of Dumaguete-based Silliman University (SU), Alcala is currently a trustee in the university.
Recognized as among the Philippines’ foremost experts in marine ecosystem conservation, Alcala pioneered in the concept of community-based coastal resource management and the use of artificial reefs as models for fisheries development in the country.
He has written over 200 books and publications, and currently serves often as reference for community ecology, biogeography and systematics of Philippine amphibians and reptiles. The former SU president has been the recipient of numerous awards and distinctions here and abroad, including the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service in 1992 and the Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation,for his numerous research work.
Alcala had served as Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and later, as Chairman of the Commission on Higher Education. He is also often engaged by international development organizations as a consultant.
An outstanding Sillimanian, Alcala obtained his degree of Bachelor of Science in Biology, magna cum laude, from Silliman University in 1951. He completed his Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in Biological Sciences at Stanford University in California in 1960 and 1966, respectively.
He is the second National Scientist from Silliman University.
